I chose Kellie Shanygne Williams to act as Beneatha Younger. I remember watching Kellie on Family Matters and her character Laura, was spunky and intelligent. The character Kellie played in Family Matters and Beneatha aren't totally the same, but the spunkiness and intelligence that Laura had can be transferred and executed well in Beneatha. In real life, Kellie started a summer program to help kids the Washington D.C. area learn more about the arts. In the play, Beneatha is working towards her future goal to become a doctor and helps fix people. The desire to help others is something that Kellie can relate to.
Pg. 1044 Physical description- “She is about twenty, as slim and intense as her brother. She is not as pretty as her sister-in-law, but her lean, almost intellectual face has a handsomeness of its own…”
Personality- She’s sarcastic, intelligent, has a sense of humor, “fresh”, out-spoken and has the drive to learn and accomplish her goal of finding her identity and working her way through school to become a doctor.
Pg.1044 (to her brother) “I dissected something that looked just like you yesterday.”
Pg.1047 (Mama to Beneatha), “Lord, child, don’t you know what to do with yourself? How long it going to be before you get tired of this now--- like you got tired of that little play-acting group you joined last year?”
Pg.1048 “I’m just tired of hearing about God all the time. What has He got to do with anything? Does He pay tuition?” “Mama, you don’t understand. It’s all a matter of ideas, and God is just one idea I don’t accept… there simply is no blasted God--- there is only man and it is he who makes miracles!”
Pg.1051 (to Asagai) “Mr. Asagai--- I want very much to talk with you. About Africa. You see, Mr. Asagai, I am looking for my identity!”
